Singapore Traffic Police Seek Vigilantes

I sent an email to the LTa the other day telling them of some serious traffic hot spots near where I live and on the way to my work. I suggested they should come out and police these things a little and people would stop them straight away. Things like running red lights and driving up the hard shoulder when the traffic gets a little busy.

It took about 10 days but eventually I got a reply and it was along the lines of:

"In these instances please record the details of the offenders and send them to the Singapore Traffic Plice and we will investigate accordingly."

Of course I could not hesitate but to send an email back telling the writer (a Traffic Police employee) that he was asking me to go out and become a traffic cop. For me to go out and record traffic infringements and report them to the police for prosecution. In other words, for me to go out and do their job for them.

I was quite surprised that these guys would respond with ideas on how I should go out and do their job for them but told them I would not be doing it and as a tax payer I expected them to do their job.

The best part was that it was only a few days later that the official accident statistics for 2006 were released and the number of minor accidents has sky rocketed in Singapore in the last 12mths. It is all because the Traffic Police do not really make their presence known - and now they are asking the public to do their job for them. Shame on them I say...
